# Overview

Faketown is a play-to-earn metaverse built on the Polygon network

{% hint style="info" %}
**The entire financial system is built on a social contract; we work for currency because we believe we can exchange it for something of future value. Faketown doesn't attempt to be a substitute for any real financial system instead we've built a platform that allows you to enjoy the absurdity of it all. Don't take this seriously, enjoy it.**

### About

Faketown is comprised of virtual towns that are populated by real player-citizens. Landowners can mine for resources under their property and mint those assets into NFTs to build their home or for resale on the secondary market. Town citizens work together to unlock benefits for their community and they vote to elect a mayor to manage their treasury, taxes and amenities.

Each town has its own residents, resources and micro-economy. Players that "live" in the same town collaborate to grow their town treasury to unlock new minting machines and generate dividends for the citizens of their town. Town taxes and fees for producing Faketown NFTs contribute to the town treasury.

Towns have a specific environment and a building block style that defines its aesthetic. Blocks are like Lego bricks that snap together to create endless building variations. While every property starts with a basic building the players must mint additional blocks to make their property unique.

> Building blocks are the primary NFT commodity in Faketown. Players use block minting machines to produce random blocks in the style of their town. Some blocks will be common low-value blocks whereas other blocks will be rare and significantly more valuable on the secondary market.&#x20;

> Properties or town lots can be customized with Building Blocks and decorated with other functional items minted via NFT minting machines. If a player decides to sell their property they sell the land and the Blocks on that town lot.&#x20;

> As the town treasury grows new NFT minting machines are made available to town residents. These minters will produce things like furniture, functional NFTs and art.&#x20;

### Why are we doing this?

Recent advancements in blockchain technology enable players to participate in the evolution of games in more meaningful ways than was previously possible. Online communities can be self-governing and they can can even generate real value through their efforts.

Faketown combines blockchain capabilities with our multiplayer experience to create a visual playground for blockchain communities. The goal is to create a gaming platform that is socially, politically, and fiscally self-regulated.

Faketown is embracing the potential of web3 and blockchain technology to create a player-owned community that will evolve based on the efforts of its citizens.

### Why will we succeed?

We're a dedicated team of developers and designers that have been evolving this platform since [1999](/history) and enjoy collaborating with one another.

We don't expect success to be easy, we believe success is the culmination of years of experience, passion, luck, and relationships.&#x20;

We have learned from our mistakes, specifically trying to do too much, rather than perfecting the basics.

Please join our community and earn the benefits of our collective contributions.

{% endhint %}

### Fake Coin

Faketown's native currency is an ERC20 token called "Fake Coin" or FAKE&#x20;

![Fake Coin](/files/PztA8sX9fxSMuVkO2Pxv)

The goal of our token is not to be a financial instrument. Faketown is a playful environment that simulates real world economics and governance. While some blockchain games focus on 3D graphics we emphasize the dynamic relationship between players and the micro-economics of their town.   &#x20;

Fake Coins are used for the following:

* Buying lots within towns
* Minting functional NFT assets via minting machines
* Rewards for elected town mayors
* Rewards for town residents&#x20;
* Rewards to town owners
* Rewards to residents

### Governance Token

Residents are awarded governance tokens for minting and belonging to a town.

### Flow of Funds

![](/files/Zq1R3jbm6ayZ25LC968y)

### Towns

Towns are created with a grid of 14 x 14 lots. Each town can contain up to 196 lots and support up to 196 citizens. Each town is a unique ERC721 token that contains a collection of lots, which are also ERC721 tokens.

Towns have the following attributes:

* Max Population
  * The maximum number of lots/residents a town can support. More residents means more contributors to your town's economy.
* Lots Available&#x20;
  * Lots available to buy on secondary markets.
* Terrain
  * The type of terrain associated with your town. May affect minting capabilities.
* Building Blocks
  * The block style used for constructing a property. Different towns mint different styles.
* Landscape
  * The background scene behind the building on the property.

Each town will maintain its own treasury that is governed by its citizens and elected mayor.&#x20;

![](/files/0Xt9yGPbjtwVAXlEBLXV)

Residents are able to mint building blocks that correspond to their town style. When a resident purchases a plot they will be granted a minting machine by default. Players can stake Fake Coins in the minting machine to produce random blocks that can be used to create a building on their property. Some blocks are common whereas other blocks are rare.

### Lots

<figure><img src="/files/AwsfCZL9WAt784iscx6m" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

Clicking on a lot zooms into a "ground level" view.&#x20;

![Sample  lot](/files/oHk42DNxOB1NXCqbHMLg)

### Mayors

Mayors are elected by the residents each month. Citizens of the town vote with governance tokens that are earned alongside XP within the game.

The following town parameters can be adjusted by the Mayor during their term:&#x20;

* Divert treasury funds to increase the output probability of the minting machines&#x20;
* Set the cost to use the minting machines
* Set the weekly reward amount for residents&#x20;
* Set the weekly salary or reward for the mayor (within limits!)

### Residents

Town residents earn Fake Coin rewards based on the size of their town treasury and the rules defined by the Mayor.

Residents can also do the following on their property.

* Mint functional NFT's via the minting machines
* Curate their property and use NFT blocks to create a building

Resident's earn XP for every item that they mint. Every once in a while the machines will short circuit and award the player Fake Coins instead of a Faketown item (ie. a block, art, electronics, furniture etc).&#x20;

### Minting Machines

Town properties are equipped with a Block Minter by default. By spending Fake Coins residents can yield Building Blocks specific to their town. The fee for minting is determined by the town's Mayor. A percentage of the minting fee goes to the Faketown development team to redistribute while the rest goes to the town treasury.

![](/files/XgUdj8bWlkwqO7o8Vj0p)

<div align="right"><img src="/files/cXvMNBvFpfqJJibMehKa" alt="Building Blocks"></div>

#### **Energy**

Minting machines require energy to mint. Towns may increase the output/efficiency of their electrical grid by adding power back to the town grid.

![Boost your town's grid.](/files/CKSEKUjKkgLzcTfcOkWG)

#### **CO2**

Minting machines are rate limited by the amount of CO2 in your town. The more rapid your town mints, the higher your towns CO2 footprint. In order to counter balance this effect your town can plant trees to reduce C02 levels and subsequently increase mint capacity.

![Plant trees to offset your town's CO2 and increase mint output.](/files/1Fbg3YExjJegaPcWrPiA)

### Town Treasury

The town treasury is used to pay the town resident's rewards and the Mayor's salary.

Activities that contribute to a towns treasury include:

* Minting assets&#x20;
* Selling new town lots within a town

### Global Reserve

Used to pay for competitive event rewards, recycled blocks and the occasional Fake Coin bonus payout from the minting machines.

### Rewards

FakeCoin rewards are paid out weekly and are paid from the town treasury.

# NFT Machines

{% hint style="info" %}
Minting functional NFT commodities contributes to your towns treasury and unlocks new minting machines. The values listed below our for illustrative purposes and subject to change during the course of development.
{% endhint %}

All town residents get a free building block minter on their property. As a town generates more Fake Coins in its treasury there are more NFT minting machines unlocked for the town's citizens.

{% hint style="warning" %}
**The treasury thresholds listed below are subject to change during the course of development. They are for illustration purposes only.**
{% endhint %}

# Fake IDs

{% hint style="info" %}
Fake IDs are characters that roam the streets of Faketown. These characters may offer tips on where to find unique resources or information on upcoming releases. Who knows, the Fake IDs may be available as NFT avatars in the near future.

# History

Faketown was originally launched in 1999 as a browser based virtual world. The founding team have worked together to build various games, virtual worlds and defi apps that enable creative expression, social interaction and play-to-earn game mechanics.

# Release 1.0 - 1999

Macromedia Shockwave

### Project Overview

Faketown was one of the first realtime interactive chat applications. We thought that the web should be realtime rather than call and response. So we dove into the realm of socket servers with shockwave multiuser server a.k.a "SMUS".

### Learnings&#x20;

Our first web application was routinely hacked but we partnered with the users that found exploits to help us refine our product. That said, we quickly learned that we could not build a real economy if users could hack their way to the top.

### Milestones

* Macromedia site of the day Nov 2, 2002  <img src="/files/3dqDHTxZhVFVBwLrGyJa" alt="" data-size="line">

# Release 2.0 - 2006

Adobe Flash Player

### Project Overview

When Faketown reached 500,000 users we raised a round of seed funding and launched a new Flash based experience. Unlike [Faketown 1.0](/history/release-1.0-1999) we decided to roll our own real time socket server so that we could have more control. &#x20;

The vision was to create the first browser based virtual world platform that enabled chat, real-time self-expression, commerce and creative competition.&#x20;

### Learnings

We were over-ambitious with our offering. We integrated the social network features of MySpace, the auction system of Ebay, and the creative expression tools of Imgur in a real-time context. Instead of focusing on balanced game mechanics we kept piling on new features and sinking our time into an unsustainable "content treadmill".&#x20;

### Milestones

* Launched promotions in the virtual world for artists like 50 Cent, Lil Mama, Oasis and T-Pain&#x20;
* Created a skate deck design competition for Andale Posse&#x20;
* Formed a [World Wild Life Foundation](https://www.worldwildlife.org/about) partnership via Saatchi & Saatchi
* Partnered with [Nitrome](https://www.nitrome.com/) to add their games to our arcades along with virtual currency and rewards integration

# Release 3.0 - 2013

HTML

### Project Overview

In 2013 we decided to rebuild Faketown from the ground up using web tech. Adobe Flash was dead and our goal was to make Faketown as accessible as possible without a plugin. Using HTML and Javascript we rebuilt the avatar system leveraging the original art. We added the block-building feature, a simple coin drip, image upload, Twitter, and YouTube integration. We also explored live casting where users could run a real-time poll and Facebook reactions would affect the outcome in Faketown.

### Learnings

Faketown v3 was a quick reboot of the community without too much effort. The main objective was to get the basic experience back online after Flash was no longer supported. Therefore, it was missing some of the core features that made Faketown unique. We did not include the map or town features that allowed smaller communities to form. We also failed to integrate any of the Faketown functional items or decor which allowed players to curate their space more easily.&#x20;

### Milestones

• Refactored our code to remove the reliance on Flash

• Added hashtag support in chat to trigger avatar emotes

• Experimented with OBS to simulcast between Faketown and Facebook Live

• Enabled "twitter bot" mode for broadcasting your tweets via your avatar while you are offline

# Roadmap

Faketown won't be built overnight. It will take hard work and the support of the community to bring it back to life. We have outlined a plan for each collection that we intend to launch in support of that goal. Some things may change but we are committed to working iteratively to keep the momentum going. Ultimately, Faketown is a player owned experience where all of our efforts lead to our collective success.

### Founder Keys

![Founders Key NFT passes are available now on Rarible](/files/uaNe79v5ig9Be2tMlhCl)

Our [first NFT collection](https://rarible.com/faketown-founder-keys/items) is limited to 256 keys that afford owners:

* Early access to mints
* Exclusive airdrops
* Voting rights on the future of Faketown
* Publishing UGC content directly into Faketown

### **Seeds**

![Seeds provide a way to get a head start on Faketown gameplay through social interaction](/files/nfjh5Eu9EXCSK4znpT2J)

Faketown Seeds will be randomly minted in 1 of 5 variants (olive, cherry blossom, cactus, maple and pine tree). Even before the metaverse is live players will be able to water their trees (and the trees of their friends) to start capturing Co2 both virtually and in the real world through a partnership with Trees.org. Once the metaverse is live players will be able to plant their trees directly on their property for additional rewards! [Learn more about the original virtual seed campaign with WWF](https://docs.faketown.com/history/release-2.0-2006#wwf-project-faketree)

### **FakeIDs**

![The original Fake IDs are back! We will be minting a limited collection of PFPs that will serve as avatars in our virtual world](/files/SwemT2uhhDeCQpm5934B)

The original Fake IDs are going to be minted along with thousands of new, fully animated avatars. Since there are only around 50 Fake IDs from the previous version of Faketown we are in the process of designing new characters, accessories and clothing items to produce enough variations to afford players with unique avatars. The original IDs will inevitably be the most rare asset with only 10 copies of each ID in a uniquely animated NFT. Here is a [preview of the Fake ID collection](https://www.figma.com/proto/NxfGqZNjW9EVAlA2uNZcbf/FakeIDs?scaling=min-zoom\&page-id=0%3A1\&node-id=2%3A2)&#x20;

### **Towns**

![The first step in rebuilding the metaverse will be the "Genesis" town collection](/files/V7dxHXb6AcmQsyMiLxyH)

The Faketown metaverse will relaunch with the introduction of 256 "Genesis" Towns. Owners of these NFTs will be able to start a community of up to 196 properties to be sold separately. As town owner you will get Fake Coin dividends based on the activity of the town residents.

### Properties

![Genesis properties will allow players to decorate a property with building blocks and NFTs from their wallet](/files/6bjWDKCt6gU57Z15xdES)

The core Faketown experience will be complete with the launch of the Genesis Properties. Players will become residents of their micro-community when they buy a property in Faketown. As always, Faketown properties are the showcase of each player's artistic expression. Each property comes equipped with a block minter so that they can produce building blocks for use on their property or resale on the secondary market. Towns that have an active community will unlock features and bigger dividends from their town treasury. Residents will also be eligible to become mayor of their town for additional benefits and influence on their town.
